Joining the Vienna Choral SocietyRehearsal Time and Place -- DirectionsTuesdays 7:15 - 9:30 p.m. at Vienna Baptist Church. Please see info later on this page for placement screenings. Who Should Join?Adults of all races and religious backgrounds who care to share in the enjoyment of learning and performing choral music. No Formal Auditions. We won't subject you to a formal audition but we have a short, simple placement screening (see below). We will ask that you be on time to rehearsals, attend most of the rehearsals, work on some material at home each week. Enjoyment comes from delivering quality performances! Our group averages 40 singers, and believe it or not we can use more sopranos. Like most groups, we need more male voices, too. How good can a non-auditioned group sound? So, you're wondering about the quality? Well, the first few rehearsals are ragged, but then -- well, listen for yourself! You must have the RealAudio player installed in your computer. What? You don't have it? Well, click the following link to add it. www.real.com Real Audio Downloads. Placement Screenings (New Members Only)Placement Screening: How it works: 2) You'll do simple vocal exercises with our director so he can get an idea of your range and ability to sing on pitch. 3) You'll sight-read (with ample help) something very simple (maybe from Sound of Music or another piece of music for our next season). Screenings Dues/CostsAnnual dues are $100 plus music. Music for the first concert will cost approximately $20-25. Please write separate checks for membership and music (payable to "VCS" or "Vienna Choral Society", and put what it's for in the memo section of the check). Dress Men: Black tux with no cummerbund Soloist PolicySoloists are selected by the director -- judged on preparation, tonal quality, intonation, diction, and appropriateness of voice. Soloists must prepare and know solo. If suitable soloists cannot be found, the director will use outside soloists. Once soloists are selected, they should be prepared to perform the part at any rehearsal. Additional rehearsals may be called for soloists for coaching. What Kind of Music Do We Sing?Vienna Choral Society Expectations for Member CommitmentsDear Choral Member, Our choral society is a team of singers. All individuals must work together each week to refine what we have reviewed at home and during previous rehearsals. We ALL have many important commitments other than VCS, but the purpose of any choral group is to produce quality music. We depend on each other -- some are stronger with rhythm, some with pitch, some read music well, some may already know the music. Interdependence helps us learn from one another to become better singers. Therefore, the Vienna Choral Society expects members to adjust their personal schedules to achieve the goals of the group by doing the following: Practice Your Music at Home You will set aside time at home to practice the assigned pieces. We realize that not everyone owns a piano or reads music, however just reviewing the words or rhythms makes a big difference. (It helps to know what you are singing about.) Tape recorders today are tiny and digital, and we encourage you to tape rehearsals and practice with your tape during the week. Sing in all Concerts You will sing in all concerts. Please look at the concert dates. We may not accept your membership if you will miss more than one concert per season. It is up to the director to excuse you. Attend all Rehearsals You will attend every rehearsal. If you miss two rehearsals per concert period (for any reason), you will be advised to consider not singing in that concert. Section Leaders keep a record of attendance, and you should discuss absences with them (in advance when possible). Contact info is in your member packet and on the website. Your section leader may refer you to the director. Be Punctual You will be on time for rehearsals and concerts. Need More Info?Call Richard Foote 703-255-5508 weekdays. |
